Somehow, ordering our Christmas Turkey today seemed strangely appropriate - probably at around the time that many of our American chums are tucking into theirs. There's a great farm near us that raises them from little chicks - they are free range and taste spectacular. Their turkeys are also really friendly and curious birds and rush up to the fence gobble gobble-ing if you walk by.
One year, I had the boys with me when I went to place our order and we went across to commune with the flock. Johnny looked at me very seriously and enquired how we were going to catch the one we wanted.
Takes pick-your-own to a whole new dimension!
Happy Thanksgiving, if you're eating yours today.

Now, those really are free range. Is it wrong to think of roast potatoes?

I think pick-your-own turkey is a very good idea! I can't believe there is only 4 weeks to Christmas. Time flies when your blogging!!!

Ooh, I love Johnny's idea, I have a wonderful image now of lots of inappropriately clothed shoppers chasing turkeys through the mud!

I rather like that idea of picking your own. And that reminds me... must order the turkey.

We do very similar, athough the FIL does the plucking!

Just like where I get my Christmas goose, except with turkeys obviously. We've been having goose for about 8 years now, much more traditional than that new-fangled turkey!

Marks and Spencer always choose our turkey for us, before picking just the right bit of it and then slapping it into a foil tray. Not as poetic, but I can live with that.

I always feel a little twinge of sadness when I drive by and the field is empty though don't you? We have beef but now that Delia is advertising Waitrose beef on tv I will have to get organised and not leave beef buying til the last minute. And I need to remember to order a ham from Dews Farm too. Mmm roll on midwinter feasting.

They look like fine beasts.
I can do a pretty good impression of a turkey- useful during a rendition of The Owl and the Pussycat.

Can you eat something whose eyes you may have gazed into?
I did it once on holiday with shrimps, but turkeys?

don't let them fool you. Turkeys are not friendly birds. I got chased by one once and it was scary!!!

Mmm makes me think of stuffing and bread sauce....mmm, hard to believe I was a veggie in my 20s!

Beautiful photo! I feel a little bad just having eaten one of those guys yesterday! But it was so good! Definitely a different experience than picking out a turkey from the meat section at the market. Thanks for sharing this photo!
